Holidays in Terong
Life in the big smoke driving you bonkers? Pretty sure a change of scenery and a bit of greenery would brighten up your days again? Then whisk yourself away to Terong and chill out among the beautiful rural landscapes, beaches, coastal plains and forests of Perak.
It's located 210 kilometres to the northwest of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.
Go for a relaxing walk while the cool sea breeze hits your face at Teluk Batik Beach or Teluk Nipah Beach.
The serene sounds of nature are waiting for you at Burmese Pool. It lies just 16 kilometres away, so you won't have to be on the road all day. Bukit Larut, 17 kilometres away, is another recommended option.
Head 45 kilometres east to Perak Stadium to watch a thrilling live game of soccer. Located in Ipoh, the venue is the home turf of the Perak FA, so dress in yellow and black and cheer your heart out!
You'll find even more just around the corner. Changkat Jering, 8 kilometres to the north, is popular for the Zoo Taiping & Night Safari and All Saints’ Church. Though, if the Perak Museum and Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve are more your thing, head 14 kilometres northwest from Terong to Matang.
Spend a day strolling around the Masjid Ubudiah, the Istana Kota and the Istana Iskandariah. These sights are all pretty close to the middle of Kuala Kangsar, 25 kilometres to the east. Looking for more? The Istana Kenangan and the Ubudiah Mosque should also be on your itinerary.
Step off terra firma and experience Perak from a whole new angle. With a number of exciting activities like swimming and snorkeling to try, it's a great playground for water enthusiasts.
Explore the region's craft workshops. They are excellent places to head to when the rain starts coming down.
Take a relaxing walk and make the most of the sunshine at the surrounding area's open-air markets.
Get a better sense of the area's secrets by heading to a few of the close-by traditional villages. If a tour guide isn't available, do some research of your own.
If you'd like to find out about the local set of beliefs, organise a visit to some temples. Even if you don't have a spiritual awakening, it's likely that you'll find some peace of mind.
Whether you enjoy the thrill of Michelin stars or gulping down a snack from a street cart, sampling the local food and drink is one of the best things about travelling. So why not tempt your taste buds by tucking into some of the area's scrumptious offerings?
No proud foodie would visit Terong without tasting a handful of the specialty dishes, such as ikan bakar (grilled seafood) and heong peng (shallot filled pastry).
Travelling goes beyond just seeing the sights and trying the local cuisine. It's also about the experiences you have with the people and their culture. Make the most of your Perak holiday by memorising a couple of words in the local tongue. Try to get your tongue around 'Selamat hari jadi / Selamat hari lahir'. It means 'happy birthday'. One more to add to the memory bank is 'Berapa harganya ini?', meaning 'how much is this?'.
Celebrated throughout the whole country, Independence Day takes place on the 31st of August. If you're fortunate enough to be here during this important day, it'll be difficult not to get swept up in the festivities!
It's always difficult to say "Sampai jumpa lagi" to Terong, but you can always come back!
When you're all set to fly home, give yourself extra time to get to Kuala Namu International Airport (KNO). Located 240 kilometres to the southwest from downtown Terong, this is the closest terminal.
