Spend more time daydreaming than doing your actual job? Find yourself looking at old travel posts again and again? Time for a Watarai-cho holiday. Hotel options in Watarai-cho's downtown area are on the thin side. But if you're up for a short drive, you can easily stay in one of the 6 hotels within 10 kilometres of the action.

Snag a room at Core and Ise Guest House Kazamiso and know that your fluffy gown and slippers are just a short commute away.

You may also like to stay at the Toba Kokusai Hotel Shiojitei, which is 20 kilometres away. Or perhaps the Toba Kokusai Hotel, just a distance of 20 kilometres from Watarai-cho. We'd also suggest the Shima Kanko Hotel The Classic and the Hotel Toba Kowakien. The first is 25 kilometres away from town, while the second is 25 kilometres away.

Caviar or corn chips? However you roll, you're certain to enjoy a trip to Shima, 20 kilometres away. With Anorisaki Lighthouse and Nakiri Shrine to explore, you're not gonna be short on things to do. The Shima Kanko Hotel The Bay Suites and Prime Resort Kashikojima are a few of the accommodation options here. 50 kilometres to the west of Watarai-cho you'll find Nabari, home to the Hotel Route-Inn Nabari and Shorenji Lake Hotel. The Sukodo Former School and the Danjiri Museum are up there with the most popular attractions to experience in Nabari.

Sitting 95 kilometres to the northwest of Watarai-cho is Otsu, a regional centre with a population of 300,000. It's where you'll find some sweet attractions, like Pieri Moriyama Mall, the Sagawa Art Museum and the Mizunomori Water Botanical Garden. Lake Biwa Bridge and the Lake Biwa Museum are a few more which are sure to offer up some envy-inducing photo ops. Otsu has hotels and apartments that should suit everyone, including the Biwako Ryokusuitei and Biwako Hotel.

If you've gotta stay near the airport, you can easily book a night at the Comfort Hotel Central International Airport or the Centrair Hotel. And if you can't be bothered looking it up, Chubu Centrair International Airport can be found 50 kilometres from downtown Watarai-cho.

I score this hotel in line with expectations - this is an excellent location if you want a day or two savouring a bit of onsen fun and relaxation the way that native Japanese would. Don’t expect up-scale luxury, but certainly I was very impressed that every convenience was provided within the rooms and around the hotel. The staff were excellent and very helpful. The atmosphere is bustling and at times a little boisterous. Particularly the evening buffet was quite ‘energetic’ with a distorting PA loudly announcing all the fresh dishes being set out and fish filleting demonstrations etc.. Dinner time was a sort of event. Plenty of choice at the buffet to eat - I was very satisfied. The hotel itself is large and sometimes bewilderingly complex in layout. I found it very interesting - like a grand bubble-era project, now slightly faded by time, but still full of interest. It took all of our two day visit to find every little interesting corner. ( I liked discovering the private onsen rooms and stretching out in my own private hot spring bath ) Oh, and there are welcome drinks from 3pm till 6 including wine juice and coffee, and when you leave there is a small free bus to the station ( even though the station is only about 300m away. In all - had a great time… just went with the flow and came away smiling.
