Holiday In Asuncion

Paraguay. The country that rhymes with Uruguay. It’s home to a city named Asuncion that is right up your alley.

The centre of commerce for the country is rich with ornate classical architecture, many of them housing museums and art galleries. There’s cobblestone streets lined with traditional craft shops and restaurants serving mouth-watering delicacies. Browse lastminute.com.au’s great deals on Asuncion holidays and say sayonara to your home—for now.

Things to Do in Asuncion

Being that this is Paraguay’s largest city, you should get something from lastminute.com.au’s Asuncion car rental deals so can you go anywhere you want, whenever you want. Head over to the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Asuncion and check out the country’s biggest collection of paintings, sculptures and photographs from international artists. The founder of the museum, Silvano Godoy, donated his collection of antique coins and furniture. What a guy!

Talk to anyone who’s been on a holiday in Asuncion and the one thing they’ll tell you to do is to visit the National Pantheon of the Heroes. It was created to honour the fallen heroes of Paraguay’s wars and has become the symbol of national pride. Every foreign dignitary who’s a “somebody” is taken here upon their arrival, so you know it’s a big deal. Be sure you catch a changing of the guard ceremony. It’s incredibly impressive—just be sure not to make a peep during it.

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

Look! You’ve got stacks on stacks on stacks of guarani (the local currency) left over because you saved heaps of dough on our Asuncion packages. Take it to Calle Palma, the main street in the downtown area where there’s a number of plazas loaded with shops. Get a hand-tooled leather belt to hold your pants up. Grab a feathered necklace that was made by local tribesmen. And you can’t leave without buying a Nanduti, a piece of embroidered lace hand-woven into the form of a spiderweb. Spiders not included.

Good thing we sent you shopping downtown, because now you’re close to food. Bring your appetite to Plaza de los Heroes and load up on street foods like empanadas, grilled meat on a skewer and hot dogs. Believe it or not, the Paraguayans love a good hot dog. For more traditional dishes, take a seat at a restaurant and order up sopa Paraguaya, a bread and cheese soufflé thing. They also like to serve meat prepared in a million different ways, so pick a few and dig in.

Your Asuncion holiday nightlife adventure should begin in the Ita Enramada neighbourhood. There’s a German brewery that will make you think you’re sipping a cold Kolsch beer in Bavaria. Then hit the tables at the local casino. Play a few rounds of your favourite table vice, then take your winnings back downtown and hop around the many dance clubs. See if you can go step-for-step in a Paraguayan polka dance-off.
