Holidays in Daikon Island

Wide-awake at night? Could be that adventurous spirit of yours! So what are you waiting for? Get up, dust off your passport and book a trip to Daikon Island!

You can find one of Japan's greatest cities just a few hours from Daikon Island. Okayama is 120 kilometres to the southeast.

Take a leisurely stroll among the coastal surrounds at Kirara Road Station or Uradome Coast.

You won't have to go too far to find some superb natural sights. Find a set of wheels and venture over to Daisen-Oki National Park, 35 kilometres away from Daikon Island, for a chilled-out day. Or maybe Amenomanai looks more appealing? You'll find it 25 kilometres away.

Want to get a bit of exercise? Work off some of those travel calories by taking a stroll around the Yuushien Garden. You can also keep your eyes peeled for local plants and critters at Daiba Park.

Whether you aspire to smooth your turns or just make it back to the chairlift in one piece, Shimane has the slopes you're after. Take your pick from Shingo Daiichi Ski Resort or Okudaisen Ski Area.

If you're looking to do a bit of exploring, add a trip to Sakaiminato to your plan. This destination is 7 kilometres to the northeast and is home to the Wako Museum and Yonago Waterbirds Sanctuary. After more ideas? Matsue is 8 kilometres to the west of Daikon Island and is proud to offer Matsue Castle and the Shimane Art Museum.

You may get the urge to book a hotel room in Yonago for a bit. This place is 18 kilometres to the east and quite close to Yonago Castle Ruins, Yumigahama Park and Galaxy Express 999. Some other nearby sights are Minatoyama Park and the Mr. Fukada's Garden.

There's a whole world of surprising flavours waiting to tap dance across your taste buds in Shimane. With plenty of delicious things to treat yourself to, all you need to take along is a hearty appetite — and perhaps a pair of stretchy slacks.

This region has a unique cooking style centred on available ingredients and local tastes. Beef and noodles are two essential elements in much of the fare.

Ask one of the locals what dish best sums up the region and tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) will likely be among the first things they advise. Hako-zushi (square sushi) is another regional signature you ought to sink your teeth into.

Anpan (sweet roll) is a dessert that summarises this place in just one mouthful. Order a serving and see how long it takes until you're back for more!

For those who love a satisfying pint, get cosy at a nearby bar and ask for Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen. It's best enjoyed alongside some storytelling and mingling with the regulars.

On the rocks or in a cocktail — it doesn't matter! A shot or two of junmaishu will kick start your night out! It's a hit with locals, and it's certainly worth a taste.

Experienced travellers often make an effort to memorise a few words and phrases in the local tongue. They've come to realise that being able to communicate with the locals isn't just useful, it's good fun too! You'll be glad you learnt 'Ikura desu ka?', which translates as 'how much is this?'. 'Hisashiburi' ('long time no see') is one more you may need.

Held annually on the 23rd of December, Birthday of Emperor Akihito occupies a special place in the locals' hearts and minds. It offers a unique opportunity to discover the country's past and let your hair down while you're at it!

You may be poor in Japanese yens when your holiday comes to an end, but you'll be rich in incredible experiences. "Sayōnara" Daikon Island!

If you're flying home, it's a wise idea to map out your route to the terminal beforehand. From the centre of Daikon Island, you'll need to travel about 220 kilometres east to Itami Airport (ITM), the nearest airport.
