Holidays in Kumia

It's simple — an adventurous life is a life well-lived. So grab your passport, pack your gear and say hello to Kumia!

It sits 110 kilometres to the northeast of the nation's capital, Helsinki.

You'll discover some lovely natural sights surrounding Kumia. Why not head 30 kilometres to Aurinko Ilves Trail? Alternatively, experience some of nature's finest artwork at Pulkkilanharju Nature Trail, 40 kilometres away.

Head 17 kilometres west to Lahden Stadium to catch an exciting live game of soccer. Located in Lahti, this arena is the home of the FC Lahti, so put on some black and cheer your heart out!

Snow bunnies and powder hounds love staying in Kumia, as it offers easy access to Mielakka Ski Center and Kokonniemi. Remember to bring plenty of warm clothing! These snowy wonderlands can get rather chilly.

You'll discover even more just around the corner. Vierumaki, 15 kilometres to the north, is popular for the Vierumaki Golf Club and the Vierumaki. Alternatively, if the Radio and Television Museum and Sibelius Hall are more your thing, go 16 kilometres west from Kumia to Lahti.

About 45 kilometres to the east, Kouvola is a place chock-full with activities. Tykkimaki Amusement Park, the Poikilo - The Kouvola Art Museum and Kouvola Central Church are all nearby. That said, the Bogey Kouvola Golf Club and the Kouvolan Circuit are also worthy.

To really experience a destination is to sample the local food and drink, so prepare to crunch, munch, slurp and sip your way around Southern Finland. The only thing you need to bring with you is a hearty appetite!

If you're perusing a menu, there's every chance you'll come across dishes with berries or beef chicken. They're just some ingredients commonly used in the kitchens here.

Ask a local for some food suggestions and hernekeitto (pea soup) will probably be the first thing they point you to. Rosolli (beetroot salad) is another regional specialty you might like to bite into.

A meal is never truly complete without dessert, so forget about counting calories and get stuck into one of the best sweet treats, mustikkapiirakka (blueberry pie)riisipuuro (rice pudding).

Is there anything more pleasurable than drinking an icy glass of beer with a fluffy, white head? Satisfy your thirst and rub shoulders with a few locals over a round or two of Olvi.

Ever heard of Salmiakki Koskenkorva? It's one of the best ways to get the night going in Southern Finland. Ask the barkeeper for a taste and then throw back a shot!

Make good use of your transit time by practising a handful of local expressions. 'En ymmärrä' can be very useful. It translates to 'I don't understand'. One more often used phrase is 'Pitkästä aikaa' ('long time no see').

There's bound to be an air of fever and excitement around the 6th of December. The locals will be getting themselves ready for Independence Day, a day of nation-wide celebrations.

Before you say your final "Nähdään" to Kumia, check your pockets for spare change that you can spend on some last-minute souvenirs.

Time to hit the skies? Pack your bag, set an alarm and map a route to Vantaa Airport (HEL). It's around 90 kilometres to the southwest.
