Holidays in Nilo

Been partying too much after work? Desperate for a break and a few quiet nights? Nilo might just be the answer. It sits among the forests of Tolima — nice and off the well-worn tourist trail. (We bet you'll feel so relaxed, you'll be under the doona by sunset!)

It's located 70 kilometres southwest of Bogota, Colombia's capital city.

The Piscilago Zoo is the perfect place to unleash your inner child. Got some more time on your hands? Try out Piscilago Water Park.

Craving a little time out in nature? Warm up the car and take off to Tequendama Falls, 50 kilometres away from Nilo. Alternatively, savour a breath of fresh air at Parque Natural Chicaque, 50 kilometres away.

Like the sound of Iglesia Anapoima and Liberia Park? These awesome sights aren't far from the middle of Apulo, 25 kilometres to the north. Use this as a base for a little while and venture outwards!

Ibague, 75 kilometres to the west, may be worth a day trip. You can use it as a port of call when visiting Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the Tolima Theater and the Tolima Art Museum. If you're still not convinced, other close by attractions include the Jardin Botanico San Jorge and Plaza de Bolivar.

When it comes time to tap into the adventurer within, get involved in some mountain climbing. That said, there aren't many better ways to experience the beauty of the region's landscapes than with a bit of hiking.

If you're looking to relax, nothing tops stepping outdoors and going picnicking or camping.

In the mood for some fun on the water? Then put on your suntan lotion and take your inner aqua-lover swimming or canoeing.

The region's art museums and indoor markets offer something for all travellers. Step inside and see what's happening.

Put on some comfortable shoes and make your way to one of the surrounding area's lovely outdoor attractions. Its open-air markets are ready and waiting to be explored.

This region has a long, fascinating history. Spend a little time scouting out some of the close-by old towns. Don't stress if you can't find much information available online — the locals are likely to have some yarns to share!

Would you love to add some deeper meaning to your journey? Whether you're looking for a spiritual experience or simply interested in learning about the local beliefs, stop by one or two of the surrounding churches and cathedrals.

Your eyes shouldn't have all the fun while you're in Tolima. Give your taste buds a little attention too by indulging in the local food and drink. After all, you haven't really experienced a place until you've tasted its flavours.

A traditional meal here often includes rice and potato, two regularly used ingredients for which the area is famous for dishing up.

Of course, you can't go to Nilo without introducing your taste buds to tomales tolimenses or ajiaco (chicken and vegetable soup). Popular with locals and considered regional classics, they are an essential experience for any visiting foodies.

They say life's not all beer and skittles, but there's certainly nothing wrong with kicking back with a cold one now and then. When you're in this area, ensure it's Pilsen.

Like talking about the texture, balance and structure of a delicious glass of wine? Or would you rather rip the cork out and just drink it? Casa Grajales white and Casa Grajales red are what you need to ask for here.

Luckily Nilo will stay just where it is, so this "Hasta la vista" doesn't have to be your last!

Ready to fly out? Pick a route, pack up your suitcase and double check your alarm. The closest airport, El Dorado International Airport (BOG), is around 70 kilometres to the northeast.
