Holidays in Sveg

Armchair travelling not cutting it these days? Dying to experience the real thing? Sveg is the perfect place to start. You'll find it sitting among the spectacular lakes and mountains of Jamtland County. (You'll have to sidestep the well-trodden tourist trail, but that's what travelling is all about, right?)

It's situated 370 kilometres to the northwest of the capital of Sweden, Stockholm.

Take some deep breaths of fresh air and immerse yourself in the natural surroundings of Hamra National Park. It lies 40 kilometres away from Sveg. You can also find a bit of peace and quiet at Sonfjallet, 45 kilometres away.

When it comes to skiing and snowboarding, there are some lucky people who are able to glide gracefully down any slope. For others, merely staying on two feet is difficult enough. Whatever your abilities, you're bound to love the fresh powder at Orsa Gronklitt Ski Area.

Vemhån is 30 kilometres to the northwest and worth having a look at. Want some more ideas? Ytterhogdal, 40 kilometres to the east of Sveg, ought to be your second stop.

After something a bit more involved? For a memorable journey over the region's landscapes, try out some snowmobiling or ice skating.

After spending a couple of hours snowboarding, you'll want to warm up in front of the fire. If you aren't too tired the next morning, you could always try skiing.

Journey back in time with an excursion to a few traditional villages. When it comes to understanding the significance of these structures, a seasoned tour guide can make a world of difference.

There's a world full of fresh flavours waiting to say hello to your taste buds in Jamtland County. With plenty of tempting things to indulge in, all you need to bring with you is a solid appetite — and perhaps your stretchiest denims.

Once you find a table and peruse a restaurant or café menu, you'll soon discover that elk and lingonberries are a few ingredients popular in the local cuisine.

You don't need to spend all night reading through the restaurant menu when you're in Sveg. Dive straight in and pick the area's specialties, such as vendace roe (vendace caviar) and janssons frestelse (potato and anchovy casserole).

You're not supposed to count calories on holiday, right? So it's a terrific excuse to treat your sweet tooth to some saffransbullar (saffron buns), a well-liked dessert.

You won't get the full travelling experience until you've had a sip of the local beer. Whether you'd like to satisfy your thirst or get some liquid courage to mingle with new friends, ask for Carnegie Porter.

Glögg (mulled wine) is what most locals have when the night calls for something with more kick. Ask your bartender for a tiny taste and see if it excites your taste buds.

A perfect glass of wine can round out a tasty meal, and popular local wines shouldn't be missed. Bacchus and merlot are the top picks.

You may be poor in Swedish kronors at the end of your trip, but you'll be rich in incredible experiences. "Hej då" Sveg!

Time to fly back home? Pack up your suitcase, set the alarm clock and map a route to Vaernes Airport (TRD). It's around 230 kilometres to the northwest.

"Rent och fint. Väldigt bra att man hade tillgång till utrustat kök. Lite lyhört, men väldigt lugna gäster. Alla 4 rum var uthyrda så vi var 9 gäster (tror jag) och det blev lite kö till toorna innan läggdags. Men som sagt, rent och fint och generösa gemensamma utrymmen."
