Holidays in Tsukiji

FOMO, wanderlust, fernweh. Whatever you're suffering from, there's only one way to solve it — visit Tsukiji. No matter what type of adventure you're craving, this Tokyo neighbourhood has loads going for it. One of the best parts of travelling is the people you meet on the way. And with 8,300,000 people calling the capital of Japan home, there's plenty of opportunities to meet new BFFs. To get to Tsukiji from Haneda Airport, find a taxi, throw your bags in the boot and head 13 kilometres to the north. If you're arriving via the city centre, you'll need to journey 1 kilometre southeast.

This city is filled with sensational things to do, and many of them can be found near Tsukiji. It's difficult to pick the leading sights here, but Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Sky Tree are two you can't miss. The gotta-see sights of the Sensoji Temple and Tokyo Imperial Palace are also easily accessible. For a different perspective on Tokyo, organise an outing to Namiki-Dori and Ginzanishi, nearby neighbourhoods just waiting to be discovered.

Seeing famed sights like Meiji Jingu Shrine is what holidays are all about. If you're heading over from Tsukiji, it's a cinch to reach. It's situated just 7 kilometres to the west.

There are loads of reasons why so many people make a beeline for the city centre. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and Tsukiji Fish Market are just a couple of them. Yasukuni Shrine and the Tokyo National Museum are a couple more of the area's greatest draws.

Nakajima Teahouse, Fukagawa Tokyo Modern Kan, the Japan Sake Center and Ippin Tsubaya are perfect for those travelling without children.

The National Art Center Tokyo, the Laforet Museum, the Design Festa Gallery and the Fujifilm Square are recommended for those eager to learn more about the local culture.

Nothing stills the mind and stirs the imagination like spending time in an art gallery. Spark your curiosity as you admire the striking collections at the Mori Art Museum, the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, the Nezu Art Museum and the Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art.

Look into the glass cabinets and find out more about the artefacts on display as you walk through the intriguing collections of the Tokyo National Science Museum, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Bridgestone Museum of Art and the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation.

The mark of an excellent performance tends to be how loud the applause is when the curtains go down. See the audience rise to their feet at the Kabuki-za Theatre, Suntory Hall, the Bunkamura and NHK Hall.

Children can be excellent travel mates, especially if you go to awesome places! For an entertaining family day out, visit Akihabara Electric Town, Shibuya Crossing, the Tokyo National Diet Library and Sumida Aquarium.

The little ones can get fed up with sightseeing. Put smiles back on their faces with a trip to one of the nearby action-packed family attractions. Joypolis, Hanayashiki Amusement Park, Meiji-jingu Gaien Ice Skating Rink and National Children’s Castle are all hot tickets.

On a sunny day, breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the splendour of nature at the East Garden, the Koishikawa Korakuen Garden, the Happoen Garden and the Kyu Iwasaki-tei Gardens.

Set aside time for some exercise at the Chinzan-so Garden, the Institute for Nature Study, the Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome and the University of Tokyo Botanical Garden. A long walk through any one of these leafy reserves will recharge your batteries.

A delightful feature of this suburb is its nearby public parks. In the midst of all the activity, you'll find plenty of places to relax and read the newspaper. Ueno Park, Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Hibiya-koen and Hamarikyu Garden are some good options.

A trip away is the perfect time to splurge a little and grab a souvenir or two. Don't forget to stroll through Mitsukoshi, Omotesando Hills, Venus Fort and Shinjuku Isetan!

Go for a fun and educational history lesson at the Edo-Tokyo Museum, National Diet Building, Imperial Palace Garden and the Waseda University. Looking at pictures in a book just doesn't compare!

Places of worship such as the Asakusa Shrine, St. Mary's Cathedral, the Zojoji Temple and Hanazono Shrine can give you a better understanding of the region's faith. Relax in the calm atmosphere and take some time to ponder.
