Wonderful staff and a fantastic onsen

We cannot say enough good things about this property. The staff were incredibly thoughtful, informative, and fun to chat with! We had never stayed in a ryokan before and would recommend KOKUYA to all our friends and family. The food was incredible and we enjoyed the variety of Onsen available just in the hotel (we never made it to the public onsens). They also had a shuttle to the snow monkey park in the morning, and will transport your luggage back to the train station upon departure. We will be back to spend more time in this wonderful place.

From the moment I arrived, I was embraced by the warmth and hospitality of the staff, who made my stay exceptional. The ryokan's traditional atmosphere, with its beautifully preserved wooden interiors and serene ambiance, immediately put me at ease. However, what truly set Sakaeya apart was the personal touch of the staff, especially Runa, whose kindness and grace left a lasting impression on me. Her attentive service, warm smile, and genuine desire to make my stay comfortable made me feel like an honored guest. Whether it was offering local insights, ensuring I enjoyed the full onsen experience, or simply sharing kind words, Runa’s presence elevated my time there. She embodied the spirit of Japanese hospitality, making each interaction a memorable one. The onsen itself was a peaceful retreat, with soothing waters and a relaxing environment that perfectly complemented the traditional ryokan experience. I left Shibu Onsen Sakaeya not only refreshed but deeply moved by the kindness of its people, particularly Runa. If you're seeking a place that marries beauty, tranquility, and heartfelt service, Sakaeya is the perfect destination.

We stayed here for one night and it was such a treat. At first we were unsure about the travel because we started in Tokyo and then we were headed to Kyoto and this added another 8 hours or so of train travel (over two days). That said, we were determined to see the snow monkeys and to stay in an authentic ryokan, so we did it and I am so glad we did!! The travel turned out to be relaxing and part of the adventure. The snow monkeys were awe inspiring and the ryokan was a beautiful experience. The food was delicious and the service even better. My teenage girls loved the uniqueness of it and my husband and I felt very relaxed and taken care of. I highly recommend this hotel!
