Holidays in Ebisu

Wanderlust, FOMO, a bad case of the travel bug. Whatever you like to call it, there’s only one way to cure it — get yourself to Ebisu. No matter what sort of awesome adventure you're craving, this Tokyo neighbourhood has plenty going for it. One of the best parts of travelling is the people you meet on the way. And with 8,300,000 locals living in the capital of Japan, there's plenty of opportunities to meet a few new BFFs. Ebisu is 5 kilometres southwest of central Tokyo. If you're coming in from Haneda Airport, toss your luggage in the boot of a taxi and make your way 12 kilometres northwest.

This city is filled with awesome things to do, and many of them are found near Ebisu. It's no simple task to pick the best attractions, but Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Imperial Palace are a couple you can't miss. The have-to-see sights of Meiji Jingu Shrine and Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building are also easily accessible. While you're in town, consider going to a few other neighbourhoods to taste more of what Tokyo has to offer. Azabu and Shibuya are good suggestions that are within easy reach.

Tokyo Sky Tree is one of those things that you need to see with your own eyes. Just 6 kilometres from the centre, you have no excuse to skip it.

Getting cabin fever in Ebisu? Get out and see Tsukiji Fish Market and Yasukuni Shrine, two terrific attractions in the centre of the city. The Tokyo National Museum and Yoyogi Park are two more of the area's biggest draws.

Leave the kids with a babysitter and swing by for some fun at Nakajima Teahouse, Shinjuku I Land, Omoide Yokocho and the Ohi Racecourse.

Like to learn something new? The National Art Center Tokyo, the Laforet Museum, the Design Festa Gallery and the Fujifilm Square are a few leading cultural attractions.

Sometimes a work of art can speak so loudly to you that you just have to find out more about it. See if the staff can enlighten you about the pieces at the Mori Art Museum, the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, the Nezu Art Museum and the Ota Memorial Museum of Art.

From hands‐on exhibits to imagination‐sparking objects and artefacts, museums have something to keep everyone interested. If you get stuck with some miserable weather, why not head on over to the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Bridgestone Museum of Art, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation and the Meguro Parasitological Museum?

There's nothing like the buzz of excitement when a live show is about to begin. Watch the curtains go up at the Kabuki-za Theatre, Suntory Hall, the Bunkamura and the New National Theatre Tokyo.

Kids often have fun in rather unusual places. Go on an adventure with them to Shibuya Crossing, the Tokyo National Diet Library, Shinagawa Aquarium and the Madame Tussauds Tokyo.

Travelling with kids can be tiring. But don't stress, you're bound to get your forty winks after spending a few hours with them at Joypolis, Meiji-jingu Gaien Ice Skating Rink, National Children’s Castle and Rinshinomori Park.

Turn off your phone, disconnect from the worries of modern life and appreciate the beauty of nature at the East Garden, the Happoen Garden, the Meiji-jingu Garden and Oedo Onsen Monogatari Hot Springs.

Keep a lookout for native flora and fauna as you trek through the appealing landscapes of the Institute for Nature Study and the Shibuya Fureai Botanical Center.

If the energy of the city is wearing you thin, head to one of the nearby local parks. Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Hibiya-koen, Shinjuku Central Park and Hamarikyu Garden are great places to take a relaxing stroll.

Quite often, the simplest way to get to know the locals is by hitting the shops. Make sure you stop by Mitsukoshi, Omotesando Hills, Venus Fort and Shinjuku Isetan.

You never know what you'll uncover at National Diet Building, Imperial Palace Garden, the Keio University and the Hachiko Statue. These historic places have plenty of stories to tell.

Whether you want to learn more about the region's customs and traditions or simply take in the peaceful surrounds, head to the Zojoji Temple, Hanazono Shrine, the Sengakuji Temple and Hie Shrine.
