Throw in your job, book a ticket, fall in love, never return. You don't have to do all of those things, but one you should do is pay for that ticket to Ikebukuro. One of the many 'hoods of Tokyo, it's an awesome base for checking out everything this city has to offer. The capital of Japan is home to 8,300,000 people. Don't be afraid to get out and make friends with a few of them! To get to Ikebukuro from Haneda Airport, grab a taxi, stash your suitcase in the boot and head 20 kilometres to the north. If you're coming from the city centre, you'll need to journey 8 kilometres northwest.

Some of this city's leading attractions are dotted near Ikebukuro, and Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Sky Tree are some of the most impressive. After taking a look at those, you'll want to keep going to the Sensoji Temple and Tokyo Imperial Palace. While you're in town, consider stopping by some other neighbourhoods to experience more of what Tokyo offers. Toshima and Takadanobaba are great recommendations that are nearby.

Just can't wait to visit Meiji Jingu Shrine? Sitting just 7 kilometres to the south, it'll be no problem reaching this world-famous attraction from Ikebukuro.

There are loads of reasons why so many people head straight for the centre of Tokyo. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and Tsukiji Fish Market are just a couple of them. Yasukuni Shrine and the Tokyo National Museum should also be included in any excursion downtown.

Shinjuku I Land, Omoide Yokocho and Yuya Wasshoi are perfect for those travelling without the kids.

Some wonderful cultural places are waiting. Start at the SCAI the Bathhouse, the Tokyo Wonder Site, the Origami Kaikan and the Nishi-Sugamo Arts Factory.

If you've got a love for the arts, arrange a trip to the National Museum of Western Art, the Asakura Choso Museum, the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art and the National Museum of Modern Art Crafts Gallery. Take a look around and if anything intrigues you, ask the staff for information about its creator.

From hands‐on exhibits to awe-inspiring objects and artefacts, museums have something for visitors of all ages. If you get stuck with a rainy day, why not take yourself over to the Tokyo National Science Museum, the Japanese Sword Museum, Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Center and the Daimyo Clock Museum?

Watching a top-notch show is a thrilling experience. Book tickets and take your seats at the New National Theatre Tokyo, the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space for an unforgettable night out.

Locating entertainment for the kids can be a vital task when going on holiday with the family. Keep a lookout for Sunshine Aquarium, the Chuo Library, the Japan Mint Tokyo Museum and the International Library of Children's Literature.

Learn all about a range of unique critters as you watch them play around at the Ueno Zoo and Higashiitabashi Park Children's Zoo.

You can find a selection of fun-filled attractions in the region. Namco Namja Town, Toshimaen Amusement Park, Meiji-jingu Gaien Ice Skating Rink and Ukima Park will keep your little ones from getting restless.

Step out and savour the views at the East Garden, the Koishikawa Korakuen Garden, the Kyu Iwasaki-tei Gardens and the Meiji-jingu Garden.

Head out to the Chinzan-so Garden, the University of Tokyo Botanical Garden and the Koishikawa Botanical Garden. If you're lucky, you may even catch sight of some native animals!

Whether you're looking to relax with a good novel in hand or meet up with some friends, the nearby urban parks are great places to be. Choose from either Ueno Park, Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Rikugi-en Garden and Shinjuku Central Park.
