Casona Palms is an oasis on the coast north of Mahahual. The two-story home is spacious, elegant in design, and comfortably furnished. It has indoor and outdoor dining spaces, and balconies for both of the upstairs bedroom suites. A separate private guest house was great for extra guests. Ocean breezes kept the home a comfortable temperature most of the time, supplemented by fans on warmer days. We used the beach every day, for walking, kayaking, fishing, and snorkeling; the water was calmer most mornings. Parts of the beach in both directions have accumulated turtle grass, sargassum, and trash, brought in by the waves. Many of the nearby properties are not occupied and are not regularly cleared.The house is a 45-50 minute drive from the charming town of Mahahual, the final section down a dirt road with a fair number of potholes and puddles (which makes for slow going). I recommend doing the drive for the first time during the day, as the jungle is very dark at night. We rented an SUV and had no issues. The property owner has a very comprehensive guide for guests, and following his recommendations made our stay more enjoyable and avoided many potential problems. The caretaker lives on the property and is friendly and very helpful.Our family loved our stay here, and would recommend the property to those who are flexible, adventurous, and enjoy a remote experience. It may not be the best fit for everyone.
