This is a lovely hotel in an excellent location: a converted historic building right next to Edinburgh Waverley train station. It would have been a wonderful stay except for one thing: when we arrived, after a very long series of flights, they wanted to kick us out. The receptionist said that they had overbooked and we’re going to send us to another hotel. I had booked months earlier, specifically for the location, and found this to be outrageous (and still do). After much argument they finally relented and allowed us to stay in the hotel we had booked and paid for. The rest of the stay was great, but what a terrible way to treat guests.
Feels like old school luxury stepping in. Staff greets you and tends to your every need. Newspaper delivered to your room. Complimentary drams of scotch left in the room. 10/10
First stop on a three week trip and very happy. Ended up in a rather large room with a 180 degree view turret. Very quiet on our floor (9). Comfortable bed, linens, shower, etc. comfortable room to relax in. Service at hotel was great, the staff is professional and friendly as well as attentive. Be prepared to wait for the lift on busy weekends esp if on a high floor. During the week tho, no problem, it’s pretty quick, considering. Hot chocolate and naturally flavored water in the lobby was great after a full day out. Grand Cafe is also lovely. Did not do the house breakfast as there are plenty of good options just a few steps away. Hair dryer and the cherry on top- hair straightener in the room. In room safe, tea kettle and assorted tea, a few snacks in the cupboard. Would recommend.
This hotel is over priced and flatters to deceive.
From the rude concierge to the leaky shower, the over cooked steak and the failed promise of the manager going to look at something for our inconvenience.
I’d have rather spent my £600 elsewhere.
I liked the location of the Scotsman Hotel, it is close to Princes Street, and the Royal Mile.
When converted from a Newspaper publishing to a Hotel..the beautiful stain glass windows and marble staircases were kept..also my room had some of the original brick. I liked the history of the building.
Breakfast is one meal you can't miss...anything you desire.
The Scotsman is well worth a visit. Go back in time to a gentler age, a hotel with nooks and crannies, where when walking up to the Hotel..someone is there to hold the door open for you...it's enough to make you smile.
Enjoy your visit.
Scotsman is a top notch hotel in the perfect spot, especially if you're traveling through Waverley train station. It is steps from the Royal Mile.
We arrived early (7am) on a sleeper train from London. Too early to check-in, but the hotel was able to hold our baggage while we explored Edinburgh before the crowds arrived. This 3-night stay was the start of a longer trip. We took the train back to London several days later and the Scotsman staff were kind enough to hold our baggage again for a few hours while we got a few last looks around the city before our midnight sleeper train departed. This was so helpful and appreciated, especially since we were no longer registered guests. It's nice to see a hotel with that level of hospitality (thank you Jessica and Pauline at reception). We will be back Edinburgh and wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else.
BTW, a couple of drams of complimentary scotch in the room upon arriving was appreciated!
