Cool hotel and friendly staff, however, as I didn’t see reviews reflecting the current climate of the neighborhood, I feel compelled to leave this review. Had I seen this initially, I wouldn’t have stayed here. This hotel is in the dead center of the Tenderloin neighborhood. I’ve seen it described as “gritty” online, but the reality is, the Tenderloin is a section of streets in SF that acts as a containment area for people using hard drugs and living on the streets. There is heavy crime-the night I stayed since Expedia wouldn’t refund my money, there were 3 cars on fire in the same neighborhood, a man was shot to death as he shot at police, I heard gunshots at 1:30am, and as I pulled into the lot I saw two people smoking cracking or meth from a glass pipe. The morning I checked out at 7am, I had to wait for an extremely filthy man to smoke something with a pipe (heroin, meth, fentanyl etc) out of tin foil in front of my car, as he was blocking my car from exiting the parking lot. There were blocks of drug users openly using and dealing in the streets. People standing half folded over as they were high and not able to function, and human waste on the streets. There is a curfew for businesses in that area as the crime is so extreme. Our Uber driver explained his car windshield was shattered twice recently in that neighborhood from people living in the streets as he was stopped in traffic. I’ve seen other reviews that downplay the extremity, but look it up to see for yourself.
