The good and not so good
The good:
My room was great, very quiet and spacious. Perfect location, near Aldgate station, Spitalfields Market and Liverpool st.
Breakfast was solid, though long queues for the 2 coffee machines.
The bad:
The front desk employees were not very pleasant or helpful. I arrived in the morning on an overnight flight and asked if they might have a room available a bit earlier than their usual check-in time, 3pm. The person I dealt with said they'd try to have it cleaned earlier but couldn't guarantee and were impatient about taking payment even though no one was waiting behind me.
I went for a long walk and when I came back to the hotel at 2pm to see if my room might be available the front desk person said it'd be ready in 10 minutes. Great. I went up to the desk after 10 minutes and they said the same thing. Then 3pm came around and the room still wasn't ready. There were a bunch of guests waiting in the lobby for rooms by now. An employee eventually came to me with a key shortly after I asked what the issue was. He said nothing and put the key in my hand and didn't let me know where the room or lifts were. I had to go to the desk to ask.
I understand that an earlier check-in is an exception, however the employees could have communicated the situation clearly to avoid disappointment. They also could have been a lot nicer to guests waiting for rooms beyond the check-in time.
In the end I just avoided dealing with them and enjoyed the room & convenience of the location.
