This was a very authentic Japanese Ryokan experience. The lady running the place was so thoughtful and informative it made our stay very special. A beautiful old fashioned guesthouse, with warm hospitality.
Absolutely loved our stay here. A tranquil escape amidst the business of tokyo. The area is very quiet and residential but has some lovely buildings to look at whilst strolling around. The hotel itself is very lovely and charming. Room (double) was a great size and had everything needed. The bath facilities were a great bonus too. I recommend getting the breakfast add on, it was delicious! Would stay again!
Better than expected , Japanese style accomodation with private facilites . Good. WiFi , hot baths close to cable car 50 metres. approx 900 Metres from town up a steep hill
Excellent ryokan in Tokyo! Best part was the traditional Japanese breakfasts that they can make vegetarian or vegan!! Really great beginning of our stay in a quintessential Japanese style.
Heritage building with much charm. Old property extremely well-cared for. A minshuku that feels like a ryokan. Very close to the University of Tokyo and its lovely neighbourhood. Will return.
What a hidden gem! A friend recommended I stay here to feel what an older building would be like. Room was spacious, hostess was great with English and genuinely curious and engaging—most of the staff I met elsewhere on my trip were stand offish, but not so here. There’s an engagement and concern for well being here.
Breakfast was so tasty!
Didn’t get to use the sento, but it looked serviceable enough.
The garden out front is something to behold. Try to catch it in fall. Really sets the stage for your journey.
Good value for money!

Liked: Staff & service, room comfort
Disliked: Cleanliness
Nice property but WAY overpriced for what you get
This is an average Ryokan or traditional Japanese Inn conviently located near Tokyo University and Ueno Station. It’s a nice property with very friendly staff, but WAY overpriced for what you get. The room and public areas are dirty and in severe need of a deep cleaning and more attention to up keep. The hot baths were so bad and odoriferous that I took one look and returned to my room. For the price I paid I was expecting a much higher quality property.
I was surprised that the three-star hotel can be as comfortable as the five-star hotel in terms of the clean and silent room and friendly staff. The hotel atmosphere invites you to explore the authentic Japanese culture. Not only cozy stay but also can learn their culture. Hope someday come to this hotel again.
Was pleasantly surprised about the building and how it continues to maintain that traditional look and feel while providing the basic western amenities for those that need them.
The staff was very helpful and the Okami (manager) always looked after our needs and helped us out plenty. Extremely satisfied about the treatment.
There are enough food choices around and public transit was excellent - a 5 minute walk and you can catch a bus that goes straight to Akihabara, you can take the subway from the university, or you can walk to a more central station (only about 10-15minutes). Shibuya and other main areas were only 30 or so minutes away.
If you like to walk around, you will find plenty of modern and traditional views including to small and medium sized shrines/temples.
Staying at Homeikan Morikawa Annex was a delight. The location was excellent, within walking distance of Tokyo Dome and the many fun activities there, the beautiful campus of Todai (University of Tokyo), Ueno Park and Ueno Okamachi where I was able to enjoy reasonable shops and delicious izakaya and ramen. Other highlights included the spacious tatami room, tasty breakfast, and overall care by the staff. Something I wouldn't have expected was the attention to little details such as the wooden flowers as part of the shoji screens or the unique decorations over the different sinks or the Roman collage in the ofuro (bath). I would definitely stay here again.
